“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”
Being part of a team in Las Vegas on mission has brought together many different people, each with gifts that widen the net we cast for the harvest. God gives us all a gift to use that is needed for the harvest. We need encouragement and tutoring to not only grow in our gift for God’s glory, but sometimes even direction as to when and where to use a gift as given from the Helper, the Holy Spirit. In all that we do though, we must do out of love. This is difficult when faced with the tendency to hold judgment on those we met on the strip rather than have compassion on others who have not yet be given ears to hear and eyes to see. Seeing the toll of sin on the faces of others should not urge us to condemn and judge, but rather step first with love to produce fruit for the Father who saved us with grace by sending his only begotten son to share the Word. The Spirit of God produces the “fruit of the Spirit” in our lives, and the first of these is love. Galatians 5:22-23
There is hope that joins the love we share with God’s people, for all are welcome to find rest and satisfy their thirst by coming to Jesus Christ. Being the desert in Las Vegas has led me to read Isaiah 40:1-2, where the Word tells us,
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken
Out of the Love Jesus Christ pours out of all people, sinners included, Hope is given for us all to have salvation, and from a faith as small as a mustard seed, we experience the grace of God and are called to be witnesses who act with Love. Jesus said to the apostles “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Las Vegas is in that sentence, and so we must be witnesses and be servants.
