Today we heard a woman’s heart. And it was beautiful.
Our team had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Karla today. She is a determined woman of God, strong of heart with a reckless faith. She’s known for a long time the call God placed on her life. She began medical school at age 17 here in Nicaragua, and today she is a doctor who focuses on children with special needs. We were able to visit the site of the future special needs clinic, funded in part by the Christmas Eve donation from Traders Point. It was an empty shell, waiting for a breath of life, which we were able to give with a fresh coat of paint in vibrant Nicaraguan colors, selected by Dr. Karla and her husband. Four members of our team, who work or study in the medical field, were also able to spend the morning with Dr. Karla, shadowing her at one of the four schools she oversees and following her on a home visit.
At the clinic, we painted bright greens and yellows and purples in rooms that will soon serve nearly 134 children with special needs. When Dr. Karla first stepped foot into this building, she envisioned the children she loves so much playing in the courtyard, interacting with future mission teams. She knew this was the right place.
On a lunch break from painting, Dr. Karla spoke to us about her vision for each room — exam rooms, a pharmacy, and a place for physical therapy, something rare in Nicaragua due to a lack of adequate space and financial resources. We were all inspired by her faith and blessed to be a part of making her dream a reality. She continues to follow the Lord in obedience in the face of difficulty and sometimes danger. She doesn’t let anything get in her way when she’s pursuing God’s call on her life. This was something that resonated with all of us because it’s something we all long for, too. God uses her in a myriad of ways, I’m sure, but one of them today was to speak life and truth into our hearts.
One thing she asked for multiple times was prayer. This is a woman who believes in the power of prayer. Big things are on the horizon, and she covets our prayers. Throughout the afternoon, we broke up into small groups and took a prayer walk around the building, praying over what will happen in each room. We prayed for healing and miracles, for strength and resources, but most of all for God’s name to be lifted high through her work. Dr. Karla is a bright light, and her work becomes a ministry and outreach to the children, their families, and the community at large.
Please pray for this woman, along with the precious children and families she serves. She is a wonderful partner in ministry, as we all work for God’s kingdom.
Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be open to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, it will be opened.
